He produced unique, enigmatic masterpieces which he marketed more successfully and persuasively than any of his rivals. His melting clocks, human chests-of-drawers and burning giraffes are instantly recognisable icons and, although provocative and often shocking, Dali's paintings are still universally popular to this day.
